Transportation Compliance Manager (Canada)
Job Summary
The Transportation Compliance Manager engages with Operations teams across Canada to ensure all sites meet transportation compliance standards and supports driver performance management. This role is responsible for the oversight of Provincial and Federal motor carrier regulations, ensuring the company maintains compliant driver and maintenance files. Utilizing telematics tools such as GeoTab and Lytx, the Manager tracks driver performance, monitors compliance trends, and provides technical support to field leadership to minimize risk and ensure regulatory adherence.
Essential Functions
- Compliance Oversight: Evaluate, monitor, and identify driver compliance issues, addressing non-compliance directly with field operations and EHS leadership.
- Regulatory Liaison: Monitor and ensure compliance with Provincial and Federal Commercial Motor Carrier regulations (Highway Traffic Acts and National Safety Code standards).
- Information Support: Manage internal and external reporting, including providing driver licensing data for insurance renewals and 3rd party external compliance reporting.
- Safety Management System (SMS): Oversee Driver Qualification Files within the internal Safety Management System (SEMS), including abstracts, licenses, medical certifications, and TDG/standardized training records.
- Carrier Profiles & Auditing: Maintain records and audit all carrier profiles and SMS data regarding roadside inspections, citations, and collisions.
- Operational Audits: Conduct comprehensive audits of maintenance files in fleet software (M5), Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIR), and Hours of Service (HOS) via GeoTab.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Fleet and Risk Management teams to ensure vehicles are properly licensed and permitted; support hiring managers in risk assessments of potential driver abstracts.
- Incident Review: Review major or reportable accidents to assist in investigations, determining cause, preventability, and identifying regional trends.
- Field Communication: Lead regular calls with Operations and Regional leadership to provide trending analysis, program updates, and transportation safety topics.
- Special Projects: Manage annual specialized compliance projects, including the renewal of Hazardous Waste Hauling Licenses (BC) and supporting the Canadian TDG program.
- Telematics Support: Support the application and utilization of GeoTab and Lytx to monitor and improve driver behavior and safety metrics.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
- Education: 4-year degree in Safety, Transportation, Fleet Logistics, or equivalent professional experience.
- Experience: 8+ years of dedicated experience in Canadian transportation compliance.
- Technical Expertise: Advanced proficiency in GeoTab Drive and Lytx/Drive Cam platforms.
- Regulatory Knowledge: Deep understanding of Canadian Federal and Provincial Motor Carrier legislation and NSC standards.
- Computer Skills: Proficient in the Google Workspace platform (Gmail, Sheets, Docs).
- Communication: Excellent presentation skills with the ability to translate complex regulatory concepts to all levels of the organization.
- Work Style: Self-starter capable of independent decision-making and managing constant re-prioritization in a fast-paced environment.
- Travel: Ability and willingness to travel (approximately 50%) to various site locations across Canada, including remote areas.
