The Role

GFL Environmental Inc. is currently looking for a Technical Project Manager to support our Ontario Solid Waste Team. This position will be responsible to support compliance and capital projects, as well as operations. In this role, the Technical Project Manager will also support the broader objectives of the Eastern Canada Solids operations and Environmental Compliance Team as required. Work location will be predominantly at the Stoney Creek Regional Facility, in the Hamilton area.

Key Responsibilities

Under the direction of the VP of Landfill and Compost Operations – Eastern Canada, the incumbent will be responsible for the following activities:

Manage environmental and capital projects:

o Plan, direct and coordinate engineering, improvement, and construction work at the Stoney

Creek Regional Facility, including issuance of RFP and reviewing submissions.

o Plan and control project budgets and schedules and ensure project delivery.

o Plan, organize and supervise the work of consultants and contractors.

Provide technical support for operations and projects delivery including:

o Assist the general manager and technical personnel assigned to

operations.

o Assist the staff in charge of monitoring and environmental compliance

at the facility.

o Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for environmental and capital projects.

o Support the development of business cases for new projects and practices.

o Ensure continuous operations excellency and compliance at all times.

Assist with regulatory and community relations matters including:

o Maintain relations and liaise with local, regional, and/or provincial regulators and other

stakeholders.

o Supervise and oversee permit applications in collaboration with consultants.

o Produce reports required by authorities.

o Stay up to date with regulatory changes that will affect the permits and/or compliance status

of the Stoney Creek Regional Facility.

o Engage and manage external consultants and contractors, and internal subject matter experts to provide technical support for operations and projects delivery.

o Support the development of capital estimates and other financial metrics to support decisions

regarding operations, maintenance capital planning, compliance risk reduction, and continuous improvement.

o Support the development of capital estimates for five-year and annual budget processes.

What We’re Looking For (Qualifications)

o Post-Secondary education in civil engineering, chemical engineering, water engineering,

environmental engineering, mining engineering, or equivalent experience in a field relevant to the function.

o Minimum of 5-7 years (greater experience is an asset) of experience working in a field relevant to the function, in project management and personnel management.

o Knowledge of the laws and regulations applicable to the field of the environment and waste

management.

o Autonomy, developed sense of organization and initiative.

o Critical thinking skills with ability to prioritize and manage multiple files simultaneously.

o Ability to work in a team.

o Excellent communication skills – Ability to communicate complicated concepts simply and concisely to audiences with varying technical backgrounds.

o Strong influencing skills – elicit cooperation and build consensus from others in the implementation of new monitoring, processes, capital projects and risk management plans;

o A valid G driver’s license, and access to a vehicle

NOTE: This position is a Hybrid opportunity with both an office and home office work environment. Working days from Monday to Friday. Hours are flexible and will change to meet the demands of the business.
