Maintenance Internship

Key Responsibilities:
Interns will gain experience and training in the following areas:

• Preventive Maintenance Procedures

  • Conduct inspections and scheduled maintenance on garbage trucks and other waste handling equipment.

• Diagnostics and Troubleshooting

  • Assisting with identifying and resolving mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues.

• Repairs and Rebuilds

  • Supporting minor and major repair tasks under supervision, including brakes, engines, hydraulics, and welding.

• Safety and Compliance

  • Learning proper PPE, OSHA safety protocols, and lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures.

• Environmental Awareness

  • Understanding the environmental regulations and best practices related to equipment and waste operations.


Requirements:
• Basic mechanical knowledge and tool usage skills
• Must be 18+ years old with a valid driver's license
• Ability to work in a physically demanding and outdoor environment

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
• Knowledge of all tools required to perform repairs and maintenance on vehicles
• Ability to follow schedules, instructions, technical manuals and maintenance guidelines, and other procedures associated with the maintenance of the company fleet
• Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers
• Strong work ethic, demonstrating integrity and trust
• Ability to prioritize workload and meet time sensitive deadlines
• Ability to be a self-starter capable of working effectively in a team environment or as an individual contributor
• Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
• Ability to read, write, and comprehend reports and associated documents
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
• Flexibility to accept and adapt to change as well as the commitment to seek continuous improvement
• Ability to exert muscle force to lift, push, pull or carry objects (repetitively)
• Ability to coordinate two or more limbs (for example: two arms, two legs, or one leg and one arm) while sitting or standing
• Ability to make simple and repeated movements of the fingers, hands, and wrists
• Knowledge of proper lifting techniques
• Ability to follow all company safety policies and procedures

Working Conditions
The Maintenance Apprentice must work inside and/or outside in all different weather conditions including extreme cold and extreme heat. May be exposed to unpleasant sights, smells, and to dangerous and/or toxic substances.

Physical Demands
Physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:
• Employee is regularly required to speak and listen
• Moderate walking, standing, climbing, heavy lifting, carrying, stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, grasping/gripping, and pushing/pulling
• Work utilizing personal protective equipment, including hearing protection, safety-toed boot, utility gloves, reflective vest, hearing and eye protection, hard hat, etc.
• Work outside and inside, around moving objects, vehicles, and machinery with moving parts. Exposure to dampness and humidity, toxic chemicals, exhaust fumes, gasoline, and diesel fuel.
• Physically able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds, as needed
