Field Technician, Recycling and Waste Management Services

Position Summary

The Field Technician provides critical on-site expertise and technical support for all aspects of hazardous and special waste management for our clients. Working directly in the field, this role collaborates closely with the Sales team to perform waste inventorying and classification, schedule waste projects, and coordinate shipments to appropriate disposal facilities.

Additionally, the Field Technician supports administrative and compliance workflows, including obtaining and reviewing SDS/MSDS documentation, completing TDG paperwork and safety forms, and ensuring accurate waste labeling and invoicing support.

As a key ambassador for GFL, the Field Technician plays a pivotal role in driving client satisfaction and upholding our commitment to safety, compliance, and service excellence.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities 

• Sample and test waste materials to determine exact transport, packaging, and disposal specifications.
• Classify and manage waste streams in strict accordance with all provincial, federal, and environmental regulations.
• Accurate completion of TDG (Transportation of Dangerous Goods) documentation, waste manifests, and shipping paperwork to accompany all waste pickups.
• Conduct field operations at remote project locations on an as-needed basis.
• Supervise project teams and tasks, ensuring every activity strictly aligns with GFL’s safety program and zero-harm culture.
• Participate in out-of-scope or complex project initiatives that require enhanced planning, preparation, and execution.
• Evaluate client needs on-site and maintain clear, timely communication with the Sales and Technical teams to optimize service delivery.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support business operations.

Education, Qualifications and Experience 

• Minimum 2 years of relevant experience in environmental services, waste management, or industrial field operations.
• Willingness and ability to perform physical work outdoors in varying and challenging weather conditions.
• Flexibility to work extended hours, non-standard shifts, and weekends, as well as travel to remote project sites as business needs dictate.
• Strong working knowledge of regulations and technical standards within the Hazardous Waste Management industry (considered a strong asset).
• Valid certifications in First Aid/CPR and H2S Alive are considered definite assets.
• Proficient with computer systems and productivity suites, specifically Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Gmail).

• Ability to perform physically demanding labor, including lifting, moving heavy containers, shoveling, and handling materials.
• Must be fit for duty daily, including maintaining a clean-shaven face as required for safety and standard respirator/PPE compliance.
• Meticulous approach with strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; a reliable, supportive team player who collaborates effectively with co-workers.
• Enthusiastic self-starter with a strong work ethic, high initiative, and a proven track record of reliable execution.
