Key Responsibilities
As a CDL Residential Driver, you will:
Operate residential and recycling collection trucks, including side-load and rear-load vehicles, ancillary equipment, and hydraulic systems
Load solid waste, yard waste, and recyclables into the truck safely and efficiently
Operate truck and equipment to compact waste while minimizing mechanical failures
Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections, complete daily truck reports, route sheets, and other required documentation
Communicate vehicle mechanical problems immediately to supervisors or mechanics
Maintain high route quality standards as set by management
Follow all safety standards, equipment checks, and precautions; comply with federal, state/provincial, local, and company rules
Identify, tag, and remove prohibited waste items from carts
Manage assigned Helper(s), if applicable, ensuring safe and efficient operations
Maintain a clean vehicle, both interior and exterior
Maintain accurate records of services performed and inventory of carts, containers, and spare parts; recommend purchases as needed
Report all accidents or incidents immediately
Exhibit professional demeanor, appearance, and customer service while on route
Wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times
Work with supervisors to improve route efficiency and attend safety and branch meetings
Perform other duties as assigned, including potential overtime
Requirements
High school diploma or GED preferred
Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
Minimum of 1 year commercial driving experience OR completion of a CDL school program
Must meet company standards for safety-sensitive functions
Ability to safely operate trucks and associated equipment
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of truck components, operation, and basic maintenance requirements
Ability to maneuver trucks in tight spaces and use mirrors to back distances of ~120 feet or more
Ability to recognize unacceptable or hazardous waste
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to read and comprehend maps, instructions, and company documentation
Ability to follow oral and written instructions, adapt to change, and commit to continuous improvement
Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry objects up to 50 pounds repeatedly using proper lifting techniques
Coordination of two or more limbs while standing or sitting
Strong commitment to safety and compliance with company policies
Physical & Mental Demands
Stand, walk, use hands/fingers, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, balance, talk, hear, and smell
Visual skills including close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
Regularly lift/move up to 10 lbs, frequently lift/move up to 25 lbs, occasionally lift/move up to 100 lbs
Sit up to 75% of the time while driving
Ability to work in loud environments
Working Conditions
Exposure to loud noise, extreme weather, humidity, moving mechanical parts, vibration, fumes, airborne particles, and toxic/caustic chemicals
Outdoor work up to 100% of the time
Continuous travel on assigned routes, away from branch location
Occasional work in high or precarious locations
Constant exposure to motor vehicle traffic and loud environments
