Location: 130 Arrow Road, North York, ON

Reporting To: Project Manager (Kim Stephenson)

Purpose: To support our high-performance environment, we are seeking a procurement professional to oversee the acquisition of MRO products and essential maintenance requirements, ensuring our facility consistently operates at peak capacity.

Role Summary

The Buyer at the Arrow Road Material Recovery Facility (MRF) is responsible for the strategic procurement of equipment, maintenance parts, and operational supplies essential to the daily function of North America’s leading recycling facility. This role involves managing vendor relationships and negotiating contracts to drive value, while maintaining cost-effectiveness and strict adherence to GFL’s safety and sustainability standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Procurement & Inventory: Research, source, and purchase equipment parts, safety gear (PPE), and industrial supplies for the MRF’s automated sorting systems.

  • Vendor Management: Identify and vet new suppliers and wholesalers; maintain strong relationships with existing vendors to ensure reliable service and priority shipping.

  • Negotiation: Conduct competitive bidding processes and negotiate pricing, payment terms, and service-level agreements to maximize ROI.

  • Operational Support: Partner with the Maintenance and Inventory Control teams to anticipate part failures and maintain a "critical spares" inventory.

  • Order Tracking: Manage the full lifecycle of purchase orders (POs), from creation and approval to delivery verification and invoice reconciliation.

  • Compliance: Ensure all purchasing activities comply with GFL corporate policies and environmental regulations.

  • Reporting: Analyze spending patterns and provide monthly reports on procurement savings and budget variances to the Reporting Manager.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Experience: 4+ years in a purchasing or procurement role, preferably within a heavy industrial, waste management, or manufacturing environment.

  • Education: A Degree or Diploma in Supply Chain Management or a related field is considered an asset.

  • Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with mechanical/electrical parts for industrial machinery and an understanding of the recycling/commodity market is a significant asset.

  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in MS Office or Google Workspace environments.

  • Soft Skills: Strong negotiation skills, excellent communication, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, 24/7 operational environment.

  • Certification: SCMP (Supply Chain Management Professional) designation or progress toward it is preferred.

Success Criteria & Key Partners

  • Success Metrics: Timely meeting of deadlines and active contribution to process improvements.

  • Internal Partners: Collaborate closely with Maintenance and Inventory Control teams to determine procurement needs.

  • External Partners: Act as the face of the GFL brand when liaising with external suppliers and wholesalers.

Working Conditions

  • Environment: 5 days per week on-site at 130 Arrow Road.

  • Physical Demands: Occasional walking through the facility to strategize with maintenance and inventory control teams.
