Position Summary

GFL Environmental Services is currently seeking a Business Analyst to join our growing Edmonton team. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate, or an early-career professional looking to build experience, expand their skill set, and grow within a dynamic and collaborative organization.

As a Business Analyst, you’ll play a key role at the intersection of Finance, IT, and Operations, supporting strategic decision-making and continuous process improvement. You’ll use a data-driven approach to identify insights, recommend best practices, and help implement meaningful change across GFL’s expanding business.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Use available data sources and tools to answer business questions, modeling scenarios, and developing metrics and KPI’s.

  • Compare and contrast performance data between lines of business and report on trends.

  • Observe and document data management processes. Plan process improvements and translate these into system change requirements.

  • Maintain prototype reports during initial business review and support finalization of requirements for permanent reports.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • University degree in engineering, finance, economics, mathematics, computer science, or a similar discipline.

  • 1–3 years of relevant experience in a business analyst or similar data-focused role.

  • Experience in modeling large data sets, performing data manipulation, and designing key performance indicators (KPIs).

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including advanced functions and data analysis tools.

  • Experience with VBA programming is an asset.

  • Familiarity with SQL and Cognos is considered an asset.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Fundamental understanding of statistical concepts and data aggregation techniques.

  • Analytical mindset and the ability to define solutions to abstract problems, test solutions, and apply critical thinking.

  • Team player that readily adapts to rapid changes in priorities and assignments.

  • Strong business acumen and the ability to build trusted relationships with business leaders.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to convey complex technical findings to non-technical stakeholders.

  • Proven ability to work cross-functionally with business units, IT teams, and project stakeholders to gather requirements and drive outcomes.

  • Self-starter who thrives in evolving environments, adapts quickly to change, and proactively seeks continuous improvement.

  • High level of accuracy and precision in data handling, documentation, and reporting.
