Hazardous and Special Waste Management and Co-ordination – Liquid Waste

Contract Full-Time


The Canadian Special Waste Manager (CSWM) will review all disposal outlets for special wastes across Canada, compile types of waste collected by GFL, direct waste to lowest cost options, negotiate pricing and contracts, understand the logistical challenges and opportunities considering all the various factors across the entire GFL business.  The goal will be to reduce current disposal costs, maximize internal waste processing capability, use internal transport lines and maximize backhaul opportunities. Success will be measured by actual net costs saved. Safety and compliance will be a priority and the CSWM will need to have a thorough knowledge of chemistry, waste and the proper handling, transportation and preparation of hazardous and special wastes.

  • Proficient understanding of Regulations in regards to transport and treatment of wastes.

  • Manage multiple projects in a fast paced environment.

  • Assist and support Industrial waste processing and disposal operations at multiple sites in a way that increases flexibility of the sites and reduces bottlenecks and inefficiencies.

  • High level of collaboration and interaction with internal Managers.

  • Liaise with transport, environmental and other Authorities having jurisdiction for operational permits, approvals and licenses.

Functional Competencies

  • Guide, plan, organize, direct waste operations in a way that meets or exceeds company, customer and regulatory expectations across diverse operations.

  • Implement strategies in alignment with strategic initiatives and provide a clear sense of direction and focus while concentrating on increasing profitability of the liquid waste business.

  • Monitor market conditions and provide guidance of changing environment.

  • Develop systems and processes that track and optimize waste disposal.

  • Familiar with Waste industry standards, processes and demands.

  • Will be required to conduct site visits to customers and vendors as required.

  • Compliance with all regulatory requirements.

  • Other duties as directed or required.


  • College diploma/degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Engineering or equivalent work experience required.

  • Minimum 10 years managing various hazardous and special waste streams.

  • Knowledge of Provincial waste regulations and inter-provincial waste movements.

  • Interpersonal Contacts: This position will have a wide range of contact with all levels of employees, from hourly staff to the Executive level and will require appropriate communication skills.

  • Experience and strong knowledge in operation of waste vehicles.

  • Experience and knowledge of TDG.

  • Strong knowledge of Highway traffic act and OH & S Act.

  • Proven record in management of operations at waste processing sites in a safe and efficient manner.

  • WHMIS training.

  • Experience using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
